About Me

Hi friends!

My name is Crystal Cascio and I am a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist passionate about nutrition, health and wellness with interests in sustainability and Integrative and Functional Nutrition (more on that later!).

Growing up on the standard American diet (also known as the “SAD” diet) and listening to messages from mainstream media on how to look and what to eat left me overwhelmed, stressed, and utterly confused throughout my teens. I struggled with irritable bowel syndrome, and developed an unhealthy relationship with my body and with food. I knew that I had to do something about the way I was feeling.

After all, life is way too short to be anything but happy.

My Philosophy

The answer to health often lies in getting back to earth.

“Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.” – Michael Pollan

Nutrition advice can often appear contradictory and confusing. We are living in an ever-expanding age of “nutritionism”, where focus on nutrients over food predominates. Eating healthy has become increasingly difficult and sadly, stressful. Each day we are faced with conflicting messages about nutrition and health from health professionals, the media, food industries, family, institutions, and peers. Nutrition is a relatively new science and we still have much to discover.

Despite all this, there is one thing most well-respected nutrition research studies have in common: a focus on whole, minimally processed plant-based foods along with variety and moderation are key aspects of an overall healthy diet. To put it simply: eat a variety of real, whole foods, and do away with restriction and avoidance. Life is too short!

I strongly believe in the importance of growing a relationship with food from seed to plate. Throughout my work I emphasize that delicious and nutritious should go hand in hand. I utilize a “whole systems approach” in my practice and personalize holistic nutrition care plans to restore function and promote optimal health.

It’s time to embrace real food; eating doesn’t have to be so complicated!

Functional Nutrition

What is Functional Nutrition?

Integrative and functional nutrition is a personalized approach to using food to prevent, manage and reverse disease. A Functional Nutritionist is equipped to personalize nutrition care plans specific to your genetics, lifestyle, environment, and personal health goals to promote optimal health. Food truly is medicine and represents so much more than just “energy” or “calories”. Food represents connection, culture, and nourishment. It should be enjoyed and cherished. Welcome to Functional Nutrition!

“One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well.”

  • I've been suffering from severe stomach bloating, gas, and pain consistently for the past three and a half years. I've tried cutting out dairy, gluten, vegetables, and even the paleo diet but nothing seemed to work. Fortunately, I reached out to Crystal who introduced me to the FODMAPs diet. After the elimination stage I immediately felt so much better! Her knowledge and support have been invaluable as I move onto the challenge phases of the diet!

  • Crystal is such a passionate and helpful resource that I'm so glad to have gotten to know. She went above and beyond just providing health and nutrition tips. She sent documents and downloads for me to reference, provided appropriate follow-up, and overall was super encouraging of trying to live a healthier life. I love that her approach is on real ways to get healthy - no cutting corners or fad tricks. Just some good, wholesome nutrition... the ultimate key to happiness and wellness!

  • After several sessions with Crystal, I was finally able to understand how to provide nutrients to my body as opposed to just following fad diets and programs that never worked. I learned how to create balanced meals with all of the daily nutrients I needed. The information Crystal provided me with (including recipes, nutrition facts and information) along with her constant feedback helped me learn how to better my health. I thank her for all of her help on my journey!
